My mother is a jeweler as well, although of a completely different sort. Because she is a beader, she travels the world and scours the Internet for beads of all types, delighting when she finds something unlike anything she's ever seen before. Her pieces don't rely on unique beads to be unique themselves, but it's certainly a bonus.
Well, for her birthday in 2006 I thought I'd feed her habit by (belatedly) creating a bead that she won't be able to find anywhere in the world. Our surname in Chinese is 艾 (Ài), so I made this hollow-form brass bead with 艾 overlaid in a seal-script style (circa 200 B.C.E.). The character appears on both sides of the bead.
