Celtic Mother and Child

February 2010
14k white gold, amethyst

There's a lot going on in this piece. It's based on an earlier piece of mine, an abstract mother and child pendant. The customer who commissioned it wanted something similar to present to his wife on the occasion of the birth of their daughter, but also something that would reflect their Celtic heritage. Since their daughter was due in February, he also wanted an amethyst set into the piece somewhere.

After toying with some knotwork ideas, I decided to take some artistic license with the ancient triskele symbol, which represents the mother/goddess spirit in Druidism—making it especially appropriate for the piece. Modifying the three whorls of the triskele worked well to mimic the original mother and child design and, along with the three sides of the amethyst trillion, also adds a nod to the Trinity.
