14 karat yellow gold or sterling silver

I was reviewing some of my scripturally-based Judaica pieces during a design session one day when it occured to me that the same design philosopy could be applied to text from the Christian Bible, using the original Koine Greek. My thoughts immediately turned to John 3:16, one of the most popular and most quoted verses in Christian thought. It's been called "the Gospel in a single verse," because for many it succinctly delivers the message of the Christian Bible in just a few words.

The full text of John 3:16 is too long to fit on a ring, so this ring uses the first half of the verse: Οὕτως γὰρ ἠγάπησεν ὁ Θεὸς τὸν κόσμον, ὥστε τὸν Υἱὸν τὸν μονογενῆ ἔδωκεν (Houtōs gar ēgapēsen ho Theos ton kosmon, hōste ton Huion ton monogenē edōken, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son"). A pastor friend of mine explains that the first half of the verse implies the second half ("...that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life"), and that the first half is frequently quoted by itself.

Even split in half, the verse is still fairly lengthy and thus is represented here on two lines, whose beginnings and ends are separated by a triquetra. Although the symbol is frequently associated with Celtic knots, it is extremely ancient and was an early Christian symbol for the Holy Trinity. The text and symbol are represented in relief (raised letters) with a border above and below the text.

In keeping with the Greek text of John 3:16 I named the piece using "Ioannen," the Greek form of "John" as used in the title of the Gospel of John. The ring is represented here in 14 karat yellow gold, but is also available in silver. Another version of this ring is also available with the letters intaglio (indented).
