Embracing Leaves Ring

February 2009
14 karat white gold

A couple came to me looking for engagement rings for each of them. The bride didn't want stones in the ring, but she wanted something that expressed both the closeness that the couple felt for each other as well as their interest in nature and in environmental consciousness. We came up with the idea of an embrace, but instead of tiny arms and hands clasped around her finger, we opted for leaves to show that the natural world is part of their relationship and their bond. From the side, you can see how the leaves reach across the shank of the ring to the other side.

The bride also wanted there to be an echo of the groom's ring in hers, so I gave the shank some slight spiraling detail to call to mind the pottery throw lines that his ring emulates.
